What is a
virus?
Everyone
has heard of viruses, and many of you have been infected with
one at some point or another. The true definition of
a virus is program that can replicate itself (This is very
much the same meaning in biology).
Viruses
can spread through email, web sites, and programs such as
music sharing software.
How do I protect myself
against a virus infection?
One
of the best methods of defense against viruses is to use up to
date anti-virus software. Anti-virus software
offers real time protection meaning that a virus can be
detected before it infects your system - this provides you
with a pro-active solution in stopping most viruses before
they have a chance to infect you.
It
is of utmost importance that you are using quality anti-virus
software. Many
anti-virus companies claim they have the best detection
software, but they fail to tell you how well the software
works in your operating system. You should always be aware of
how software affects the performance of your
PC.
When
looking for an antivirus program, it is highly recommended you
take advantage of the trial period offered by most anti virus
companies.
By testing the software you get a chance to
see how well the product works, and also how well it performs
in your system.
DO
NOT use more than one antivirus product at a time -
this could cause SERIOUS problems. Also (as a personal
choice) I also would discourage you from installing and
uninstalling more than 3 or 4 different anti-virus programs
consecutively - try to stick with one brand.
Before
installing anti-virus software you will need to make sure your
system is virus and spyware free. You can perform a free
online scan to confirm you are ready to install
anti-virus.
